ADVISORY: August 31 COUNCIL MEETING

Council to discuss legislative proposals, finalize regional grant application process

August 24, 2022

Olympia—At its Aug. 31 meeting, the Washington Student Achievement Council will review and approve a proposed application process for the new Regional Challenge Grant program. The program will award grants to regional partnerships between community organizations, higher education institutions and K-12 to increase direct postsecondary enrollment and close equity gaps.

The council will also review legislative proposals for the upcoming 2023 legislative session, including additional funding for the Regional Challenge Grant program. Another proposal would fund partnerships to provide telehealth mental and behavioral care access for students at some institutions of higher education, and evaluate the impacts of telehealth care on students’ academic and health outcomes. Also on the agenda is a review of the state’s higher education equity landscape and potential equity-related metrics.

New council member Mustapha Samateh will join his colleagues in these discussions. A student at the University of Washington, Samateh is majoring in Political Science and International Security. Samateh is the governor-appointed undergraduate student member of the council.
