Aim Higher Washington Trainings

Aim Higher Washington Trainings and Strategy Sessions

These trainings and strategy sessions will be offered in partnership with the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC), Council of Presidents (COP), and Independent Colleges of Washington (ICW). These trainings will cover content-based areas such as financial aid basics and financial aid application navigation. A series of strategy sessions to support implementation of what is learned in the content-based trainings will also be offered. Our workshops were created for:

  • K-12 staff such as school counselors, career counselors/specialists, administrators, and teachers.
  • Any college staff who work with students such as student services, admissions and outreach, advisors, residence life, financial aid staff, and more.
  • Community-based organization staff.
  • Anyone who wants to learn about and teach their community about financial aid!

These sessions are designed to address knowledge gaps and promote a better understanding of the financial aid process.

Financial aid basics

Financial aid basics

In this session, participants will learn the basics of financial aid. We will cover federal and state aid programs including grants, scholarships, work study and loans. We will also discuss when and where to apply for financial aid. Participants will leave with a better understanding of postsecondary funding. This session will prepare participants to help with basic financial aid questions. High school clock hours will be available.

Financial aid navigation

Financial aid navigation

In this session, participants will learn about the financial aid process and how to help others navigate applying for financial aid. We will cover how to apply for postsecondary funding with the FAFSA and the WASFA. We will also discuss common challenges and errors as well as next steps. Participants will leave with a better understanding of how to help others with this important process. This sessions will prepare participants to assist students as they apply for financial aid and train others. High school clock hours will be available.

FAFSA Simplification

FAFSA Simplification

Big changes are happening to financial aid! In this session, we will discuss the FAFSA Simplification Act, best practices in implementing changes, and how to communicate changes to partners, students, and their families. We will also share free resources to support you as you help students take their next steps.
