2025-26 FAFSA & WASFA Timeline
2025-26 financial aid applications to open in December 2024
September 30, 2024
Olympia—High school seniors and others planning to attend college or career training during the 2025-26 school year can begin applying for aid in December 2024. Applications typically open on October 1 for people wanting to start college the next fall.
After significant delays and technical issues with the 2024-25 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) announced a longer phase-in with additional testing for the 2025-26 application launch. DOE aims to ensure the form is functional before opening it up to all applicants.
In Washington, there are two ways to apply for financial aid. U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens apply for federal and state aid with the FAFSA. People who can't file the FAFSA due to immigration status can apply only for state aid with the WASFA (Washington Application for State Financial Aid). The WASFA is based on the FAFSA, so will open at the same time. Most people should submit a FAFSA to maximize financial aid.
Last year’s issues resulted from changes related to the FAFSA Simplification Act. Those changes included a shorter, less complex form and a new Student Aid Index (SAI) intended to reflect students’ costs and financial need more accurately; however, many families experienced technical difficulties with the new form, and as a result, application rates were down across the country. Experts hope the delay in this year’s form will allow time for DOE to fix any issues and minimize barriers that may discourage people from applying.
In the meantime, students and families can take steps to plan and prepare. Each individual who will contribute to completing the FAFSA will need to create a Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID), with separate FSA IDs for students and their parent(s) or guardian(s). Similarly, WASFA applicants must register for a WASFA account. People should also check with any colleges or training programs they’re interested in to confirm admissions requirements, application timelines and other important dates.
Applying for financial aid is a crucial first step toward college and career training. Completing a financial aid application opens up more options for the future. This year, a family of four making up to $120,500 can qualify for grant aid in Washington.
