Advisory: August 19 &21 Council Meeting

Council welcoming new members, developing proposals to increase attainment amidst pandemic

August 14, 2020

Olympia—On Wednesday, Aug. 19 and Friday, Aug. 21, the Washington Student Achievement Council will discuss postsecondary education policy issues to address in its upcoming strategic action plan. Two recently appointed members will be in attendance, Sativah Jones and Alejandro Alcantar.

The meeting will start with updates from the Equity Workgroup to frame the discussions of postsecondary affordability, enrollment, completion, and student support. The council will consider stakeholder input and data on racial disparities to prioritize what the state should focus on in the next budget cycle and over the next few years. This work will continue into fall, culminating in November when the council will release its 2021-22 Strategic Action Plan.

New Council members Sativah Jones and Alejandro Alcantar will join their colleagues in these discussions.

Jones brings extensive experience supporting first-generation students of color at both the high school and postsecondary levels. As the assistant director of college and career readiness at Highline Public Schools, she has a keen understanding of what schools and systems can do to support students, who are furthest from educational justice, as they transition from K-12 to education beyond high school.

Alcantar, a senior and business major at Central Washington University, is the Council’s new student member. As a student leader, he’s worked on CWU fiscal and budget issues. As the state confronts budget challenges, Alcantar will focus on how to ease the financial burden on students.

The public will have opportunities to comment on both days.

  • Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 9:55 a.m.
  • Friday, Aug. 21, at 3:45 p.m.

All meeting materials will be available online on the day of the meeting. TVW will live stream the meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 19.
