Information for students on the Health Professional Loan Repayment and Scholarship programs can be found on the Paying for College section of the Washington Student Achievement Council website.
The Health Professional Loan Repayment and Scholarship program was created to address the critical shortage of health care professionals statewide. The Loan Repayment portion of the program provides loan payment assistance to licensed primary care health professionals. It provides up to $35,000 per year for a minimum of two years ($70,000), and up to $35,000 each additional year for a maximum of five years.
The Scholarship provides scholarships to students training to become primary care health professionals. In return, program participants agree to provide primary care health care in rural or underserved urban areas with designated shortages. In 2012, approximately 120 health professionals worked in underserved areas of Washington as a result of this program. However, because of reductions in state funding, new scholarships are not being awarded at this time.
The Council and the Washington State Department of Health jointly administer these programs.
A facility interested in becoming an eligible site for loan repayment must submit an online application. The deadline to submit applications is the first week of September. Further questions should be submitted to John Hanson at John.Hanson@doh.wa.gov, Mary Roberts at Mary.Roberts@doh.wa.gov, or Chris Wilkins at chrisw@hecb.wa.gov.
